National Guild of Piano Teachers
Auditions for National Guild of Piano Teachers (Guild) involves the student playing from 2-20 pieces in front of a judge. The student is not competing against other students. They are playing for a score. The rewards for playing in this audition involves a certificate and a pin. The pin indicates the level of play the student participated in. The levels are:
Local - 2-3 pieces (bronze pin)
District - 4-6 pieces (bronze pin)
State - 7-9 pieces (silver pin)
National - 10-14 pieces (gold pin)
International - 15-20 pieces (larger gold pin)
Guild auditions are held in May and can sometimes be held during the week during the schoolday. This means there is a possibility a student may need to miss about an hour of school for this audition. Special permission forms written and distributed by Guild are given to the parent as soon as the audition day/time has been determined.
The pieces performed at the audition are determined according to the level of play the student is studying in the fall prior to the audition time. The pieces the student uses for Federation auditions (if they perform in those auditions) may also be used at the Guild auditions. In addition, students may choose to perform "phases" in replacement of pieces for the auditions. Examples of the phases would include scales, arpeggios, sight-reading, improvisation, etc. There is a set number of phases at each lever that may replace an actual piece of music. That will be discussed with the student at the time they determine to play in the auditions and in what category they wish to participate.
| National Federation of Music Clubs
Auditions for the National Federation of Music Clubs (Federation) are normally held in March. These auditions require 2 memorized pieces. One of the pieces comes from a book provided to piano teachers by the Federation. The pieces in this book change every 3 years. The other piece is one from the student's current repertoire. The pieces chosen are at the level of play of the student as the fall season begins prior to the upcoming auditions.
The student plays for a judge but does not compete against other students. This audition is performed for a grade. The student will receive a grade of Superior (90-100), Excellent (80-89), Satisfactory (70-79), Fair (60-69) or Needs Improvement (59 or below). No grades are given below 60. The grades are awarded based on a point system as follows:
Superior - 5 points
Excellent - 4 points
Satisfactory - 3 points
Fair - 2 points
Needs Improvement - 1 point
Upon earning 15 points (3 years based on consecutive Superior ratings), the student receives a trophy. Certificates are awarded noting the rating for every year the student participates in Federation auditions.
Nothing other than the 2 pices are required for this audition.
